“Health is the greatest of gifts, contentment the best riches; trust is the best of relationships.”
Dhammapada, verse 204 (tr. Max Müller)
What this quote means
This short verse from the Dhammapada, a collection of the Buddha’s teachings, names three kinds of wealth that money cannot buy. Health lets us enjoy everything else. Contentment means being at peace with what we have instead of always chasing more. Trust is what makes any relationship, at home or at work, feel safe.
On a festival day full of gifts, sweets and shopping, the verse is a gentle reminder that the most valuable gifts are the ones we cannot wrap.
An everyday example
Think of a Diwali when someone in the family was unwell. The new clothes and decorations hardly mattered; everyone simply wanted them to feel better. Or think of a friend you trust completely. That feeling is worth more than any expensive present.
